Things to do in Crete

Crete is the largest island of all Greece with thousand kilometers of Mediterranean coastline, white sand beaches and coves accessible only with a boat. Speaking about Crete is talking about culture and archeology; the island has significant deposits of the Minoan civilization, visible at Knossos, Phaistos and Gotina. Mooring your boat in one of the marinas or coastal ports, you are able to enjoy excursions of all the ruins and museums, but thanks to its coves, it’s also easy to anchor in the island. And speaking of archeology, we cannot ignore the mythology, and it is worth remembering that the island is the birthplace of Zeus and also the place where Daedalus built the famous labyrinth of the Minotaur.

But this is not the only offer of this fantastic island; if what the captain wants is the bustle of the city, there are places such as Chania, Rethimnon, Herakleion and Agios Nikolaos in the northern part of Crete. On the other hand, for nature lovers, a National Park - The Samaria Gorge, created by a small river running between the White Mountains and Mt. Volakias, is a perfect choice for hiking. In the southern part of Crete there are villages only accessible by sea, such as Loutro, a place still not affected by tourism, with no hotels or cars. The beaches are idyllic and have fine golden sand; however, it’s important to remember that the south coast is also very rugged, so navigating can be dangerous if the captain isn’t experienced. Although the climate of the whole island is Mediterranean, the north is more humid and sunny. There we find Heraklion, the capital of this beautiful island, with a fantastic nightlife, located right in the center of the northern coast.
