Bahía Lapataia (Lapataia, Tierra del Fuego Province)

Things to do in Tierra del Fuego Province

Represent the southernmost inhabited places on the planet. The boats that venture within their confines can shelter in the bay of Ushuaia, where the picturesque town of the same name is located, which holds the title of being the southernmost city on the planet. Further south there is nothing, so it is also known as the city at the End of the World.

However Ushuaia is a major tourist and business center, to which port naval and commercial vessels arrive from all around the world, but also private yachts. It communicates with the Beagle Channel, a navigable sea route with western mouth at Gordon Island, and eastern at Punta Ganado. The channel width is 2 nautical miles with narrowest point around 7.5 cables wide, and an average depth of 200 meters (minimum 14m). Besides being able to enjoy the large specific biodiversity of this area, such as the southern king crab, famous for its delicate flavor as a traditional culinary stew, we can also find a wide range of cultural attractions such as the Maritime Museum of Ushuaia, the End of the World Museum or the Acatushun Museum.

The dock of this city is 550 meters long and 29 wide. Not far away, in Puerto Rio Grande, Caleta La Mision Port is being built, with an offshore pier for marine traffic, but it’s important to know that it is subject to consistently strong winds. On the 11th of July, the town celebrates its biggest festival.
